Picture of the day

Hungarian flag of the 1956 Revolution

This is an original flag of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. As you can see, it has seen a lot of action and taken a lot of battle damage. The fighting between Hungarian freedom fighters and the Soviet Army was quite heavy in the downtown areas of Budapest. The Hungarian flag with a hole cut in the middle became the symbol of the Hungarian revolutionaries. Early on in the revolution, Hungarians cut out the dreaded "Rákosi badge" from the flag. It was the communist coat-of-arms of the tyrannical Rákosi regime. Many people around the world often wonder why the flag had a hole cut in it.
