Significant number

The number of Hungarians deported by the Soviets in 1945 to gulags in the Soviet Union. This number included both Hungarian military personnel, political prisoners and civilians. Both ethnic Magyars (Hungarians) and ethnic Germans were deported from Hungary. It is a well-known fact that 200,000 people perished, many of whom were civilians. They were used as forced labour by the Soviet authorities in over 2000 camps across the Soviet Union. The majority perished in transit to the work camps and in the camps themselves due to malnutrition, bad weather and dysentery. These Hungarians are known as the "forgotten war victims".
