First GOLD at London Olympics

Hungary got its first gold medal of the London Olympics in fencing. Hungarian fencer Áron Szilágyi  won the gold medal in the men's individual saber competition on Sunday. He beat Italy's Diego Ochiuzzi 15-8 in the final. Apparently, many of the world's top-ranked fencers suffered defeats in the competition. This Olympic gold medal is Szilagyi's first major title. It is great news not only for the Hungarian Olympic team but for Hungarian fencing in general.

Hungary has had a long and proud tradition in fencing both at the Olympics and world competitions. It is no surprise that Hungary took a gold medal in this event. We would like to congratulate Áron on his gold medal at the London Olympics. Hungary's best performance at the Olympics was at the summer games in 1952 in Helsinki, Finland. Hungary landed in third place overall with at total of 42 medals (16 gold, 10 silver, 16 bronze). Good luck to our athletes at London 2012 Olympic games!
